The Secret and Social Issues

By Aiden Garcia

Several successful nations draw inspiration from Buddhism as well as people who seek guidance for the key purpose of their life. Millions of individuals possessing very distinct cultural backgrounds are adhering to the principles and teachings of Buddha. This way of life spread out across Asia as a dominating religion and quickly increased the number of followers centuries after Buddha lived.

Social issues that may arise among teenagers are pre-marital sex, which could lead to pregnancy or disease, alcohol, drugs, low self-esteem, acceptance, and cigarette smoking. If our teen would get in with the wrong crowd where these things are permitted, then their future can be altered at an early age. They could end up with habits that could result in them not finishing school. They could end up with a life threatening disease or recklessness could result in death.

We can help them face social issues by communication. Tell them the danger of these social issues and what could happen to them if they became involved in any and encourage them to make right decisions and not be influenced by others opinion. Parents should frequently ask their teen questions about their involvement. They should watch for sudden changes in their behavior, if any is found, professional help is recommended.

Practical solutions to real-life societal issues can be found in understanding Buddhism's precepts. They believe that moral behavior is from curbing one's desires and wants. Happiness only comes if you let go of your earthy desires and consuming ego. Societies experience almost similar problems from petty thefts to gruesome murders and corruption of town funds to unauthorized pork barrels. This way of life teaches us to be ethical and moral in all facets of our life. The world would be a lot more peaceful if we all practice this way of life.

I realize that teachers have a full schedule of class room work but before class begin a few minutes can be taken to let their students know that if they need or want to talk about something, they would make themselves available to listen to what they have to say. If there is time left after class, it can be used by talking to them about social issues. Sometimes teens are more comfortable talking to other people. They might open up to them about their concerns quicker than with their parents. If a teen want to talk privately, make sure that what he or she say is kept confident otherwise, you can lose his trust. Offer to get help for the teen if the problem he is facing requires outside intervention.

Principals of schools should also be available to talk with students about social issues. They could organize a group called abstinence and it does not have to be only sex related. It could also cover anti-drug, anti-drugs or smoke free.

Furthermore, Buddhism can greatly improve and change other social issues like abortion, euthanasia and more. It allows a person to look at life differently and to appreciate one's existence in this world. Morality can be looked at from many angles. Different approaches are present in all cultures and the judgment must be done on their fruits and not only because they dominate the entire population or they have better organization edifice. Those are trivial reasoning and does not aid in the improvement of one's country. Keep an open mind and choose what you think is best and morally upright.
